Disney Announces New Live-Action Moana Movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson via the Walt Disney Company shareholder meeting
Chief Executive Officer, Bob Iger, from the Walt Disney Company announced during a share holders meeting via their webcast that Disney is currently in development of a new live-action movie for Moana! That’s right fans, you have it officially confirmed by Disney and the one and only Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The actor has expressed his pride in being a part of this film and has stated the following:
“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen. This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui—inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia—is one that runs very deep for me. I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor, because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion, and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.”
For those who may not be familiar with the original film, Moana debuted in 2016 as an animated film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The story follows the journey of a young Polynesian girl named Moana Waialiki, voiced by Hawaiian actress and singer Auliʻi Cravalho who is chosen by the ocean to restore the heart of the goddess Te Fiti and save her island from a curse.
Throughout the film, Moana is guided by Maui, a demigod voiced by Dwayne Johnson, who assists her on her quest. The film was praised for its portrayal of Polynesian culture and its empowering message of self-discovery and female leadership.
According to Auli’i Cravalho she stated the following about Moana: “She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses,” Cravalho. Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring—to audiences around the world, to me, and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.”

This has generated a lot of excitement among fans of the original movie and those looking forward to seeing the story brought to life in a new way. But of course there are other fans who are skeptical of its success given the performance of their other live actions films.
